Captain Reyes took a deep breath.
“Tyler didn’t want you to know,” he said. “He’s been going through a difficult time and didn’t want you to worry.”
Amanda was stunned. She looked toward Tyler, who had just walked into the room.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked.
“I didn’t want your birthday surprise to turn into something you worried about,” he replied.
She put down the cake and hugged him.
“You’re my husband. I’ll always want to be there for you.”
The firefighters eventually joined them, and what was supposed to be a simple birthday surprise turned into an emotional evening filled with laughter, cake, and honest conversations.
