Former First Couple Shares Exciting News About Their Next Collaboration

Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have shared news of an exciting new creative venture they will be undertaking together. While some supporters have continued to encourage a possible return to politics, the couple has chosen instead to deepen their focus on storytelling and production work through their company, Higher Ground Productions.

Their latest project marks an important milestone for the company: its first involvement in a Broadway production. The Obamas are helping to bring back Proof, the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize–winning play written by David Auburn.

The story follows Catherine, the daughter of a highly gifted but emotionally troubled mathematician, who discovers a notebook after his death that may contain a groundbreaking mathematical discovery. As she tries to uncover the truth, the narrative explores themes of intelligence, legacy, trust, and the emotional weight passed between generations.

The upcoming revival will feature Don Cheadle as the mathematician and Ayo Edebiri as his daughter, with both actors making their Broadway debuts in these roles. The production is scheduled for a 16-week run beginning in April and will be directed by Tony Award winner Thomas Kail, who is also serving as one of the producers alongside Mike Bosner and the Obamas.

In a statement released on March 11, Barack and Michelle Obama expressed their pride in supporting the project and bringing the acclaimed play back to the stage. They described Proof as the kind of story Higher Ground was created to support—one that explores brilliance, uncertainty, and the deep connections between people and their loved ones.

Since its launch, Higher Ground Productions has primarily focused on film, television, and podcast projects. The company has already earned significant recognition, including multiple Academy Award nominations, an Oscar win for American Factory, six Emmy Awards, and two Grammy Awards.

Producers Thomas Kail and Mike Bosner welcomed the partnership, noting that Higher Ground’s commitment to meaningful storytelling made them a natural fit for the revival. They also highlighted the continued relevance of Proof, emphasizing its exploration of family dynamics, mental health, and self-doubt—subjects that remain deeply resonant today.

Originally premiering Off-Broadway in 2000 before transferring to Broadway, Proof quickly became one of the most celebrated plays of its time, winning both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. It later reached an even wider audience through its 2005 film adaptation starring Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Now, with Higher Ground Productions joining the team, expectations for the revival are high. Industry observers suggest the production could offer a fresh interpretation of the classic, potentially introducing new staging approaches and modern sensibilities while preserving the emotional core of the original work.

As anticipation builds, theater fans are left wondering whether this new Broadway revival will recapture the same acclaim and cultural impact as its predecessor. With a strong creative team, a celebrated script, and the backing of the Obamas’ production company, Proof is already shaping up to be one of the season’s most closely watched productions
